Off-Licences in Leeds Succeed in Refusing Alcohol to Under-18s

May 6th 2009

Twelve off-licences in Leeds have been given a huge pat on the back after passing the ‘test purchase’ test by refusing to sell alcohol to under-18s.

The City Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) carried out an operation targeting premises.

A total of 12 off-licence premises were visited by special constables in plain clothes and a 13-year-old boy who volunteered to attempt to buy alcohol.

All staff refused, asking for identification proving he was aged 18 or over.

Each of the owners will receive a letter of congratulations and encouragement to keep up their standards from the Licensing Department.

Insp Mark Jessop of the City NPT, said: ‘Alcohol is often the main ingredient in anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder, particularly among young people who are as likely to be a victim as they are likely to be responsible for offences when in drink.’

‘Stopping underage drinkers getting hold of alcohol in the first place is extremely important and I would congratulate the off-licences who passed the test and encourage them to keep up these high standards.’
