SIA Door Staff Checks in Hull and Northampton

December 30th 2008

The operation in Hull checked 13 premises and 35 door staff. Of these four individuals were working unlicensed and another four door staff were discovered to be breaking their licence conditions by not displaying their ‘badges’ correctly.

Jackie Munn, SIA head of investigation said: ‘We were happy to support Humberside Police during this intelligence-led operation. Determined action will now be taken against those found flouting the law. There will be further operations to ensure licensed premises and door staff in Hull are operating legally.’

Investigators from the SIA were also out in Northamptonshire checking that door staff held valid SIA licences.

The SIA and the police visited 10 venues in Northampton city centre. 27 door staff were checked, 26 of whom held a valid SIA licence and one door supervisor was found working with an expired licence.

Jackie Munn said: ‘I’m pleased that, during these operations, most of the door staff inspected were SIA licensed. We also found a small number of individuals flouting the law, and they may be subject to police prosecutions.’

She added: ‘These checks were a great example of enforcement partners working together to help the public feel safer on a night out, but I want to reinforce the message that SIA licence holders are trained, qualified and professional operatives. There’s no longer a role for amateurs in this line of work.’

Door Supervisors to Wear CCTV Cameras This Christmas

December 17th 2008

Police are increasing patrols for ‘Black Friday’, one of the busiest pub nights of the year to help prevent drunken behaviour.

And for the first time rowdy Christmas revellers in Exeter who cause trouble could find themselves caught on camera.

Door staff for the city’s Night Owl Security Services will be wearing miniature CCTV cameras in Exeter and East Devon to deter violence and film footage of any disorder that occurs.

Police back the initiative and will have 20 officers out on foot and in force vans in the city centre on Friday, starting from 2pm, to stop and deal with troublemakers.

Dubbed Black Friday, and for many the last working day before Christmas, the day has become notorious for violent crimes.

Sergeant Neil Harvey, who will be out patrolling on Friday, said the night is traditionally one of the busiest for police.

He said: ‘There are more incidents because of alcohol on this night, which is why we are working with door staff to stop that from escalating.’

‘We will have a very visible presence in the city centre with extra patrols starting this Friday and continuing until the New Year.’

Mr Harvey added: ‘If anything goes wrong, it is all recorded and can help us to sort out the problem and prosecute people who misbehave.’

Nick Warren, Night Owl operations manager said: ‘Our staff will be wearing the cameras around Christmas. They weigh around 4kg each and can record images and speech.’

‘It’s some of the most sophisticated equipment on the market. So people can see what really happened.

SIA Launch Operation Cinnamon

December 5th 2008

As the busy festive period for pubs and clubs approaches, the Security Industry Authority (SIA) is launching Operation Cinnamon – a nationwide, multi-agency campaign to carry out targeted and random checks on door staff working at licensed premises.

The initiative, which will run through Christmas into the New Year, will see SIA investigators working with regional police forces, licensing officers, local authorities and other partners to ensure only SIA licensed door staff are employed at licensed premises.

Jackie Munn, an SIA Head of Investigation, who is leading on Operation Cinnamon said:

“I am looking forward to working with our partners during Operation Cinnamon to ensure compliance with the law. We want the festive season to be a safe and enjoyable one for the public.

I want to reinforce the message that SIA licence holders are trained, qualified and professional operatives – there is no room at the inn for amateurs.”
