Kimberley club steward John Harvey saved the life of one of his customers after his heart stopped in the bar.
Frank Woods, 64, had been drinking in the Kimberley Miners Welfare on Saturday, April 12, when he had a massive heart attack. At about 11.10pm, his wife Barbara crossed the pub to say goodbye to friends when they heard a scream – and rushed back to see the father of four had turned a deathly white.
As John, who had just come round from behind the bar, approached Frank, he saw he was losing colour and didn’t seem to be breathing so he laid Frank out on the dancefloor and started CPR.
As an anonymous nurse gave heart compressions, John jumped over the bar to get the defibrillator which is always kept to hand. He wired the machine to Frank and shocked him until his heart began beating again, all the time as shocked drinkers stood by.
Wife Barbara, of Valley Road, Kimberley, said: “They brought him back. We watched him go from white to blue.
“John Harvey was absolutely brilliant. He used that defibrillator for the first time and it saved my husband’s life. I keep saying thank you but it never seems enough. That goes to my family too, them and our friends have been a godsend.”
